Meet Sandy Becher

Sandy Becher is our first M.O.M. for the year.  Sandy was initiated in 1980, one year after the Gamma Alpha chapter was started.  Sandy has been on the Executive Board as Recording Secretary for two bienniums and on numerous committees.  She was Gamma Alpha's Chapter Woman of Distinction in 1995.  Sandy currently chairs the Yearbook Committee and does an excellent job keeping our chapter informed.

Sandy is starting her thirtieth year of teaching.  She has taught first, second, third, fifth and sixth grades at Elliott School.  Sandy was always a vital staff member and curriculum leader at the elementary level. She served on countless district committees at the elementary level.  Sandy was ready for a change after teaching over twenty years in elementary.  She currently is the Reading and Math Consultant at Adams Middle School in Wayne-Westland.  She is in charge of the Title I / At-Risk Program which encompasses the Reading Renaissance Program (which includes Accelerated Reader) and We're Ideal Math Program..  She still serves on district committees and was the Girls' Track Coach at Adams as well.  Commitment and involvement have always been part of Sandy's teaching.

Sandy's husband, Steve, is a teacher in Wayne-Westland.  For many years he and Sandy taught second grade at different schools in the district and shared teaching ideas.  Steve is currently teaching seventh grade Geography at Marshall Middle School.  Steve is also on many district committees and is active in the union.

If you know Sandy, you know how proud she is of her children and with good reason.  Her daughter, Jennifer, graduated from the United States Coast Guard Academy with a degree in Government this May.  Jennifer will be stationed in Boston for two years and will also pursue a post graduate degree.  Her son, Jon, graduated from John Glenn High School in June.  He is currently attending Saginaw Valley State University on a football scholarship.  Jon is interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement, specifically with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

In 1996, Sandy was selected as Teacher of the Year by the YMCA for her teaching and involvement in community activities.

Sandy's hobbies have included chauffeuring her children to countless activities over the years.  With both children out of the house, Sandy now has time for golf, bridge, travel and reading the trashy novels which she passes along to her friends.

Sandy has enjoyed her involvement with Delta Kappa Gamma and has sponsored several members. She tries to get them involved with committee work right away.

"The friendships I have made in Delta Kappa Gamma will stay with me forever."
