Meet Evelyn Shuput

Evelyn Shuput is this month's M.O.M. Evelyn was one of the twelve charter members back in 1979. She has been actively involved on so many committees and service projects that she can't remember them all! She chaired Nominations, Personal Growth and the World Fellowship committees. Evelyn has also served as First Vice President. Her legacy to Gamma Alpha is renowned. She and a friend are responsible for the lyrics to the Gamma Alpha retirement song!

Evelyn received her Bachelor of Science and Master of Arts from Wayne State University. She also earned a M.A. in Guidance from University of Michigan.

Evelyn started her teaching career in "Homemaking" at Post Junior High in Detroit in 1959. She started working in Livonia middle schools (Whittier and Whitman) in 1962 and remained there until 1965. She taught Family Life Education and was in the Department of Guidance and Counseling at Franklin High School from 1965-1994. After retirement in 1994, Evelyn has worked as a long term substitute in guidance on two separate occasions. Evelyn says, "It's fun to be with the 'kids' and coworkers again knowing it's a temporary assignment and as a sub I don't have to attend a million meetings."

Evelyn lives in Highland on a small lake with her elderly cat, Mish, a domestic tiger, and her really elderly dog, Pepper, a Lab-Shepherd mix. Evelyn's hobbies include working in her home, antique-ing, her animals (she used to have five), and catching up on her reading. She has enrolled in several adult education classes just for fun. She also finds time to tutor for adult literacy and ESL classes for Huron Valley Schools. Evelyn is an animal rights supporter and a vegetarian.

Evelyn loves to travel, but lately she has found time to visit only Texas and Las Vegas. She hopes to return to Texas this spring. She is considering a trip to Paris is '98. This will be to attend a conference and for fun. She plans to visit Wiesbaden and relatives who live there in the near future

"It's neat being retired, though it was an adjustment for me," says Evelyn. "That check arrives every month like magic and all I do is whatever I please. It's wonderfully scary!"

Evelyn is adjusting to retirement!
