Gamma Alpha Bulletin

Vol 18 No 1. August/September 1997

President's Message

I would like to welcome everyone back from their relaxing summer vacations. I had some needed R & R at my summer home in St. Helen. Many thanks to Mary Jo for the great luncheon she provided for our summer Executive Board Meeting. It looks like we're in store for some excellent programs this year. Be sure to check our calendar for topics, dates and times and to mark your calendar. See you in September with your vacation souvenirs and checkbooks!

Judy Handley is Northville's newest School Board member.  Her daughter, Beth, starts in the engineering program at the University of Michigan this month.

A note from Abby Roche

Dear DKG Sisters,
Your beautiful red rose arrived the day after I returned home from the hospital.  You are always so thoughtful with your flowers, notes and cards.  I do so much miss seeing you and think of you often.  I am doing well.  I reach the one month benchmark this coming Friday with two months to go.
A kind friend is writing my thank you notes.  Thank you for your thoughtfulness.

    Love,
    Abby

Ed. Note:   Abby had two vertebrae fused (C-1 and C-2).  She had to wear a skull halo to keep stable for over a month.  Then she wore a collar and breastplate.  After this surgery heals, Abby will undergo knee replacement surgery, probably this fall.

Grace Morgan has kept busy this summer.  She has planted and taken care of the flowers at her church as well as teaching vacation Bible school.

Colleen Retherford found our web site during an Internet  workshop she took this summer.  She also spent three weeks in England and Scotland.

Committee Chairmen need to make sure they are not the only one on their committee.  Encourage your friends to join your committee.  Bring names of new members to the September meeting.

Esther Loskowske has attended two science workshops this summer as well as babysitting for her two nieces, taking care of the many animals she raises and working in her garden.

Marie Canzoneri announces her relocation to Doneson World Class Travel beginning July 14, 1997.  Reservations that have been made through All Aboard will not be affected.  Any new reservations can be made by calling Marie at home or at Doneson World Class Travel at (810) 353-5811 or 1-800-772-5811.

Anyone interested in ordering the Delta Kappa Gamma ribbon that your Society pin can be attached to see Barb Broadley during the September meeting.

 1997 CALENDAR

September 10:  Our first Business Meeting will be held at Water Club Grill, Inc. (Ann Arbor Road and I-275).  This is sponsored by the World Fellowship Committee and Executive Board.  We will have a Re-Commitment Ceremony and our annual Silent Auction.  World Fellowship Chairman Debbie Ervin reminds you to bring your vacation souvenir with you for our auction.  The proceeds from the auction go to the Society's World Fellowship Fund.  There will also be committee sign up for those who were unable to do so at our Birthday Dinner.  Treasurer Grace is requesting that you bring your checkbook to pay your dues at this time.  Working members and initiates are assessed $73; retirees pay $58.  There will be a raffle for 50% discount on your dues at this meeting.  But you must be present to win!  Service Projects are also asking for a donation at this time.  The committee is purchasing sweatshirts for the children to decorate for the holidays and we need your financial help.  A donation of 5-10 dollars would be greatly appreciated.  (The committee wants to purchase the sweatshirts before the October meeting.)  It's a good thing most of us are back to work!  Dinner will be at 5:30 and the meeting will begin at 7:00.  We hope to see all of you there.

October 8:  This month's meeting is sponsored by the Service Projects Committee, chaired by Judy Handley.  This month we will have a Field Trip to the Wayne County Family Center.  We will meet at a restaurant near the Center.  (Location of the restaurant and time will be in the October newsletter.)  Susan Usher, the director of the Family Center, will speak to us and give us a tour of the facility.  Members are requested to donate items that children could use for Halloween costumes (wigs, make-up, dress-up odds and ends) and then we will help the children decorate sweatshirts.  Eileen Rodak, Alpha Iota State President, will be invited to this meeting.  We hope many of you will be able to attend this outing.

November 5: This month's meeting is sponsored by the Professional Affairs Committee.  There will be a True Colors presentation (personality traits) arranged by Sherry Green.  Dinner will be at 5:30 at the Water Club Grill, Inc. and the presentation will begin at 7:00.

December 10:  The Music Committee (June, Esther, Sandy and Colleen) will arrange a "Holiday Night Out" for us.  The last three ladies were unable to attend the June meeting, hence they are now on the Music Committee!  Restaurant and time will be available in a later newsletter.

January 14:  Executive Board  meets at 4:00 at Water Club Grill, Inc.  Dinner will be at 5:30 and the Business Meeting will be at 7:00. This meeting is sponsored by the Scholarship Committee.  After our Business Meeting, we will make Valentine Sweatshirts and/or decorative gasoline gloves.  More details as the time nears.

February 11: We will meet at Water Club Grill, Inc. for dinner at 5:30 and present applications for new members at 7:00.  Shirley and Cindy will arrange a speaker to share career options for high school students.  More specifics will be available later.

March 11: Personal Growth and Membership Committees will sponsor our new member orientation meeting with a "Founders Tribute."  We will meet at Water Club Grill, Inc. for dinner at 5:30 and the meeting will begin at 7:00.
